Literacy programme in Cape Town township settlements
Support
€ 9,850Township Roots is a community-led organisation working in the disadvantaged township settlements of Nyanga, Phillipi and Delft in Cape Town, South Africa.
These communities struggle with high numbers of school dropouts, contributing to high unemployment rates, ultimately perpetuating the relentless cycle of poverty and lack of socioeconomic development within these communities.
Township Roots identifies the gap in literacy to be a major reason for high dropout rates, creating demotivation and disillusionment regarding a child’s educational future. The schools in these communities are under-resourced. External intervention is required to ensure these children’s educational foundation is properly nurtured, to ensure that their minds are stimulated during these critical years.
The project will provide support to the parents and caregivers of the children who are still at Foundation Phase Level and will continue to host home-base literacy activities for 300 children.
